Zoo - Season 2, Episode 3

Only Zoo could give us killer ants and toe amputation in the same episode and this was a treat of over the top nonsense. With the MaGuffin of the 'Stage 2 Mutation', our out of control animals can now do even more ridiculous things, ants sneaking into people's food and electrocuting them from the inside, poor Eleanor - our heroes link to the Government - getting zapped in Geneva. Once again, our animal experts are without a liaison and working on their own, especially as new army boss General Andrew Davies is a no-good critter, shooting poor Eleanor's adjutant because he's trying to cover up that the Noah program will not just kill all the world's animals but over two million humans as well! Once again, out five experts are the only ones who can stop Armageddon - or is that six? Daniela Marzan (Alyssa Diaz) has managed to get on the wrong side most of the team but she and Abraham (Nonso Anozie) have a connection and they end up doing more than sparring together. She's dropped off to return to her unit but is soon back when ants blow up a transformer at the station. She also helpfully overheard Davies killing Eleanor's assistant. Lucky that. We got a brilliantly bonkers finale with our heroes rushing to the Particle Accelerator to stop the ants causing a fission event. Oh yes, the stakes have certainly risen this year! In Season 1 the jeopardy consisted of a Frenchwoman being menaced by a bear, now every attack threatens to kill thousands. Our heroes stopped the Antpocalypse, by blowing stuff up - I didn't really understand - and then, in case the stakes weren't enough, Marzan swallowed an ant that threatened to kill her! This show is so ridiculous and I love it.
Meanwhile, Jamie (Kristen Connelly) is still lost in the Canadian wilderness with the mysterious Logan (Josh Salatin). She manages to get a look in his bag and finds he has pictures of her and her details. What's his game, then? When she confronts him, he says that he was hired to pilot people up to get the leopard but is that the whole story? Where is all the money he carries from? Did he really lose his girlfriend to an animal attack? There's obviously more to him than meets the eye. However, he lets her have his gun and he's needed when examination of Jamie's injured foot reveals she has frostbite in her big toe. Lucky for them that Logan has an axe! Chop! Overall, this was a wonderfully nuts 45 minutes of telly which didn't try to be realistic once. I love some of the obvious holes in logic, especially how, with all their government allies dead, how Chloe and co can afford to put fuel in that giant plane or land without General Davies impounding it. Is it that easy to take off and land a ridiculously huge plane without permission from the country or the authorities? Of course, it's best not to ponder these things too much and just revel in the nonsense. How soon before Jackson goes full mutant? Here, Mitch and Marzan saw the ants part around Jackson, the insects instinctively knowing that Oz was one of them, a fellow mutant. How long before Jackson starts exhibiting animalistic behaviour? Best worst show on telly.
