I have three other blogs to cover other media, but I've neglected letters until now. Even as a writer, I find myself so distant from literature that the idea of reading a book is almost something that never pops into my head. But I have a small stack of books and other literature that need reading and perhaps writing about them will help encourage me to read more.
However, it's not that I don't read at all. It's just that these days, I'm spending more of my time reading different things online. My Google Reader has dozens of subscriptions, which I take time to read with some frequency. And I don't have any problem seeking out written sources of information. I probably spend a good amount of my day reading. It's just that I haven't been reading much creative writing.
The person I am now is far removed from the person I used to be, who amassed a large pile of paperbacks that he would read, more than once or twice and be enthralled with the various worlds that he would visit when he read them. I did experience a rebirth of reading back when I lived out East and was taking the subway to work every day. It's the perfect place to read, since you will be spending time just spacing out otherwise. So, I actually took the time then to read a number of books.
These days, however, living in California, I have to drive to work and that's no place for reading. Furthermore, I spend most of my day in front of a computer at work and while I'd love to read, I'm the kind of person that gets so engrossed in reading that I will fail at my job if I read during work. This leaves me little place to read but at home, but my intended career leads me to write during the one or two hours I have at home before I go to sleep for the next day, so reading just doesn't have much time in my life, except on weekends, which I also principally spend writing or watching movies to help fuel my screenwriting.
Still, my list of things to read grows longer and I get no further in it, so I start this blog with the hope that I will make more time to read, even if a little, here and there and make a dent in my extremely long list of media to read.
But, I don't want this to just be about reading literature, but I want it to also be about the art of the written word and about language, the building blocks of literature, as well as concepts and ideas that revolve around the medium, like the technology of reading and writing (books, scrolls, computer screens, ink, pencil, etc.). Finally, I don't want this blog just to be about what I read, but I want to also open this space up for writing as well. Although my main mode of writing is for the screen, I still find myself writing a lot, fiction, poetry, essays and more and I think this will be a good outlet for me amidst the book reviews and blogging about the awesomeness of particular words.
