Despite the outrageous indiscipline in tertiary institutions in Nigeria, Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro (FPI) comes out to be different in the aspects of the discipline
Indiscipline has become a normal phenomenon in tertiary
institutions but FPI distinct itself from such mess.
The school management of this institution always makes sure
that the students of the institution abide by the rules and regulations.
Speaking with newsmen on campus in interviews are some of
the views of the students towards discipline in the school.
Obadimu Ismail, a 200 level student of computer science
said, “The school is like a bridge between goals and achievement for the
student.” He added that ‘’without hard work and discipline it is difficult to
be a top professional.’’
Another student, Abdul Rahman Oyetade in the department of
electrical engineering also said that “in term of discipline, the school is
known better for that, my parent intentionally sent me to this prestigious
institution because of the high discipline in the school”.
Additionally, offences like stealing, damage of asset, arson
forgery, impersonation, unlawful assembly indecent sexual practices or batter
of fellow students and other unlawful of in disciplinary conducts or practices
related to it is not tolerated by the institution and the penalty for it is
very high.
Moreover, the penalty for drunkenness or smoking on campus,
breach of peace, publication and display of obscure materials, obstruction of
the enforcement of the institutional regulation, using religion to disrupt
activities on campus is rustication for two semesters according to the
constitution enshrined in the student handbook of the institution.
However, students of this institution always make sure that
they do not fall, victims of these offences, because the penalty is certain.
Cultism which is rampant in an institution like this, have
been reduced to the barest minimum or let say the institution is free of cultism
within the campus.
The school management has made all sorts of violent acts or
indiscipline actions out of the institution.
A bad company which bring about initiation into secret cults
hat involves taking lives of other people intentionally have been totally
eradicated from the institution.
Discipline in the institution has made a lot of the students
to move freely on the school campus even though at night most especially when
students go to night class during the examination period. _
Students of this intuition are always in confidence in any
place within the campus because there is comprehensive security in the school.
